Multi-platinum, award-winning musical sensation, Maher Zain, is lovingly dubbed “Islamic pop’s biggest stars” by The New York Times (2017). The Swedish singer, songwriter and music producer has released three albums with Awakening Records, Thank You Allah (2009), Forgive Me (2012) and One (2016), with his debut album being certified platinum by Warner Music Malaysia and Sony Music Indonesia.
With more than 26 million fans worldwide, Maher is the most popular Muslim artist on Facebook, and the most viewed on YouTube, with his official and fan-made music videos exceeding 5.8 billion views. His YouTube channel alone garners over 100 million views a month.
Through his initial interest in the R&B genre, Maher previously worked with internationally renowned producer RedOne. Not long after, a spiritual awakening led him to consider creating music reflective of his multi-faceted identity; exploring what it meant to be of European, Arab and Muslim descent in the political, social and economic landscape of the 21st century.
In early 2009, Maher decided to leave the New York music production scene and join forces with Awakening Records (UK) to create an album that was fully reflective of spiritual growth and development as an artist. His debut album ‘Thank You Allah’ was released by Awakening Records in October 2009 to international acclaim. The album went on to become a multi-platinum success, reaching the number 1 spot on Amazon’s ‘World Music’ charts and number 8 on the R&B charts. It simultaneously picked up 40 platinum awards along the way, officially making it Malaysia’s best-selling music album of 2010 and indeed, the last decade.
In April 2012, Maher’s second album ‘Forgive Me’ was released. The album seamlessly integrates the dynamism of modern music, fusing together Eastern and Western influences, and has far surpassed the success of his debut album – captivating the senses of audiences worldwide. Maher picked up 25 platinum awards for his album ‘Forgive Me’. The album sales were the highest in South East Asia in 2012, allowing Maher to beat Adele, Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez and other international artists.
His long-awaited third album – ‘One’ – was released in June 2016, and features duets with internationally acclaimed pop stars Mustafa Ceceli from Turkey and Atif Aslam from Pakistan.
A staunch humanitarian, Maher uses every opportunity – while on and off tour – to serve local communities. His recent philanthropic endeavors involve his participation in the UNHCR campaign to stand together ‘#WithRefugees’, as well as a visit to a refugee rehabilitation centre in Reyhanli, Turkey in early 2020 with UK-registered charity One Family. As a firm believer in his responsibility towards serving the planet, Maher leaves no stone unturned when it comes to using music as a powerful tool to move and inspire people. His often reflective and deeply personal lyrics are intended to take his listeners on a conscious journey of self-development, with an end-goal of facilitating lasting change for the lives of millions around the world.
